The best places to visit in Agra are the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, with Mehtab Bagh and Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb worth adding if you have the time. This travel guide covers all five: what each one is, how long to allow, what a foreign visitor pays to enter, when each is open, and how to fit them into one or two days. The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are in the city, Fatehpur Sikri is about 37 km away, and the Taj Mahal is the only one that closes on Fridays.

The best places to visit in Agra at a glance

Agra Fort The red sandstone Mughal fortress and palace complex 1½ to 2 hours ₹650 (₹600 on Fridays or after the Taj the same day) No

Ticket prices come from the Archaeological Survey of India's ticketing page, checked on 12 October 2026. Children under 15 enter free. Our Taj Mahal ticket price guide explains the two Taj tickets and what each includes. The time to allow is our own rule of thumb for a relaxed visit.

1. Taj Mahal: the first thing to see in Agra

The Taj Mahal is the reason most people come to Agra, and it rewards an early start. It opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and the first hour is the quietest. Entry has two parts: complex entry, which covers the gardens, the reflecting pool and the view from outside, and a separate ticket for the main mausoleum chamber under the central dome. Photography is not allowed inside that chamber, and tripods, drones and food are not allowed anywhere in the complex (see what you can't bring).

Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. Plan around it before you book anything else.

2. Agra Fort: the Mughal palace city beside the Yamuna

Agra Fort is the second of the three big sights, and the one that tells you the most about how the Mughal emperors lived. It is a working complex of palaces, mosques and courtyards, not one building, so give it more than a photo stop. It is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day, including Fridays, which makes it the obvious stop if your Agra day falls on a Friday. If you visit it after the Taj Mahal on the same day, the ASI lists a lower ticket price.

3. Fatehpur Sikri: Akbar's abandoned capital

Fatehpur Sikri is a fortified city that Emperor Akbar began building as his capital in 1571 and left behind within about 15 years. Because it was abandoned rather than rebuilt, it survives as a remarkably complete Mughal city, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look for Buland Darwaza, one of the tallest gateways in the world, the Panch Mahal and the Tomb of Salim Chishti.

It is about 37 km from Agra, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road, and a proper visit takes 2½ to 3½ hours. That is why it suits a two-day Agra trip better than a same-day trip from Delhi. It is open sunrise to sunset every day.

4. Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb and Mehtab Bagh: the two easy extras

Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, nicknamed the "Baby Taj", was finished in 1628 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father. It is smaller than the Taj Mahal and quieter, with delicate inlay work and lattice screens. Mehtab Bagh is a Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, and it is the classic place to see the monument framed across the water, especially at sunset. Both are on the left bank of the river and open sunrise to sunset every day.

How many days do you need in Agra?

One day is enough for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and it is how most visitors from Delhi do it. Our one-day guide walks through the timings. A same-day plan looks like this:

Two days lets you add Fatehpur Sikri and slow down:

If you want to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise without a pre-dawn drive from Delhi, an overnight stay in Agra is the easy way. Check the day of the week first: a two-day plan that visits the Taj Mahal on a Friday will not work.

When is the best time to visit Agra?

October to March has the mildest weather, but the winter months also bring morning fog and the worst air quality of the year. Summer from April to June regularly passes 40°C. Our month-by-month guide has temperatures, pollution and sunrise times for every month.

How do you get to Agra from Delhi?

Agra is about 230 km from Delhi. By road it takes roughly three to four hours on the Yamuna Expressway. By train, the Gatimaan Express takes 1 hour 40 minutes and runs every day except Friday. See how long the trip really takes and the Gatimaan Express timetable before you plan.

Where to stay in Agra

For a one-night stay, choose a hotel near the Taj Mahal's east gate or on the Fatehabad Road side of the city. Our ranking of Agra's premium and luxury hotels compares ten of the best-known ones by TripAdvisor rating and average nightly rate.
