Mehtab Bagh is a Charbagh-style Mughal garden directly north of the Taj Mahal, on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. Its foundation is credited to Babur, the first Mughal emperor — making it one of the earliest Mughal gardens in the area, predating the Taj Mahal itself by roughly a century. In the 1990s, ASI restored the site, replanting it with species brought in to match the original Mughal-era layout.

Ticket price

Foreign tourists pay ₹300; Indian and SAARC/BIMSTEC nationals pay ₹25. The price is the same on Fridays. Children under 15 enter free.

Hours

Open daily, sunrise to sunset — no Friday closure. Sunrise in Agra ranges from about 5:20 AM in June to about 7:10 AM in January; see the month-by-month sunrise table.

Why visit

Mehtab Bagh doesn’t have the Taj Mahal’s marble inlay work or mausoleum chamber — what it has is the view. Standing across the river gives you the Taj Mahal framed by its own reflection in the garden’s pools, without the crowds inside the main complex. It’s a known spot for sunset photography specifically, since the light hits the marble from across the water.

Getting there

Mehtab Bagh sits directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal — close enough to add to a same-day itinerary if your schedule allows a stop at the end of the day. For the monument it faces, see our Taj Mahal attraction page; for everything else nearby, see the Agra travel hub.
