How to Pick the Ideal Agra Holiday Package
By IWIS Global · Published 5 October 2026 · Updated 12 October 2026
For most visitors coming from Delhi, the best Agra holiday package is a private same-day tour: one vehicle (or one train), one guide, tickets sorted, and you are back in Delhi that evening. Add a night in Agra only if you want a slower pace or the Taj Mahal at sunrise without a very early start. This guide explains what a good package includes, how the options differ, and how to match one to couples, families and short-stay visitors.
What a good Agra package includes
Whatever you book, check five things before you pay:
- Transport: a private vehicle, or reserved train seats, in both directions.
- A guide: one guide for your group, not a shared coach tour.
- Entry tickets: included, or clearly listed as an extra.
- Pickup: from your hotel or the airport.
- The full price, shown before you pay, with no surprise stops or fees.
For reference, the official Taj Mahal website lists these foreign-visitor ticket prices: 1,100 rupees for the Taj Mahal complex plus an optional 200 rupees for the main mausoleum, 650 rupees for Agra Fort (600 if you visit after the Taj Mahal the same day), 300 rupees for Mehtab Bagh, 310 for Itimad-ud-Daulah and 610 for Fatehpur Sikri. Children under 15 enter free (tajmahal.gov.in). Our ticket price guide explains which ticket you need.
Same-day or overnight?
| Same-day from Delhi | Overnight in Agra | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the ground | About 12 to 14 hours door to door | Two relaxed days |
| Best for | Short stays, tight schedules, first visits | Couples, photographers, slower travellers |
| Taj Mahal at sunrise | Possible, with a very early start | Easy: you wake up in Agra |
| Cost | One tour price, no hotel | Tour or guide, plus a hotel |
| Catch | A long day | You arrange the hotel yourself |
Most of our tours are same-day trips from Delhi. We also run an Agra overnight tour and 3, 4 and 5 day Golden Triangle tours with hotels included. If you arrange your own hotel instead, message us on WhatsApp to ask what we can arrange around your dates.
Car or Gatimaan Express?
- By car: door to door, about 230 km each way on the Yamuna Expressway, roughly three to four hours. The most flexible option, and the best value for a group because the vehicle cost is shared. See how long the drive really takes.
- By Gatimaan Express train: 1 hour 40 minutes each way, so more of the day is at the monuments. It doesn't run on Fridays, and seats are priced per person. See the Gatimaan timetable and booking guide.
Sample itineraries
A. Same-day by car. Early pickup in Delhi, the drive to Agra, the Taj Mahal with your guide, lunch, Agra Fort, then back to Delhi in the evening. Our Delhi to Agra Same-Day Taj Mahal Tour by Car follows this plan.
B. Same-day by train. The 08:10 Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a guide who meets you at Agra Cantt, and the evening train home. See our Gatimaan Express tour.
C. Sunrise day. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and the first hour is the quietest. Read whether it is worth the early start, then see the Taj Mahal Sunrise Tour.
D. Two days, self-arranged. On day one, visit Agra Fort in the afternoon, then see the Taj Mahal from across the river at Mehtab Bagh. On day two, enter the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then visit Itimad-ud-Daulah, and Fatehpur Sikri (about 39 km from Agra) if you have time. Every monument except the Taj Mahal is open seven days a week.
Which package suits you?
- Couples: a sunrise visit or the luxury car tour in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz or BMW sedan, and Mehtab Bagh for a quieter view of the Taj Mahal.
- Families: a private vehicle lets you stop when children need a break. Pick a later start rather than sunrise, and remember that under-15s enter free.
- Short-stay visitors: the Gatimaan train or a same-day car trip fits a stopover. Check that your timings leave room for traffic before a flight.

Timing and packing tips
- The busiest season runs from October to February. See the best time to visit for fog, heat and sunrise times.
- Carry a small daypack. Food is not allowed inside the Taj Mahal, and tripods need ASI permission, so check our list of things not to bring.
- Dress in layers for winter mornings and wear comfortable shoes for the marble.
- Book only through an operator you have checked: our guide to Taj Mahal scams shows how.
