For a same-day Taj Mahal trip, the Gatimaan Express is the fastest train from Delhi to Agra: 1 hour 40 minutes from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt. The Shatabdi and the Taj Express also work, but each has a catch for a day trip. This guide covers the trains, how to buy tickets as a visitor, how to get from Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal, and how a same-day schedule fits together.

The three trains that suit a day trip

Train Leaves Delhi Reaches Agra Cantt Journey Runs Classes
Gatimaan Express 12050 08:10, Hazrat Nizamuddin 09:50 1 h 40 min Mon to Thu, Sat, Sun (not Friday) Chair Car, Executive Class
Bhopal Shatabdi 12002 06:00, New Delhi 07:50 1 h 50 min Daily Chair Car, Executive Class
Taj Express 12280 06:55, New Delhi 09:25 2 h 30 min Daily Chair Car, Second Sitting

Coming back the same evening:

Train Leaves Agra Cantt Reaches Delhi Note
Gatimaan Express 12049 17:35 19:30, Hazrat Nizamuddin Not on Fridays. Some operators list 17:50, so confirm before you book
Taj Express 12279 18:20 21:07, Hazrat Nizamuddin Daily
Bhopal Shatabdi 12001 21:25 23:50, New Delhi Daily, but a very late return

Times are from public timetable listings (ixigo.com) checked on 3 October 2026. Indian Railways changes timetables, so check the current one on the IRCTC website before you book. Other slower trains also serve the route, but these three give a workable day.

Which one to choose

Two stations in Delhi, not one

Delhi has more than one main station, and this trips up first-time visitors. The Gatimaan Express leaves from Hazrat Nizamuddin. The Shatabdi and the Taj Express leave from New Delhi railway station. The two are in different parts of the city, so check the station on your ticket before you set off. Everything arrives at Agra Cantt, the station you want for the Taj Mahal.

Buying tickets as a visitor

  1. Pick the date and train. Check the Taj Mahal is open: it is closed on Fridays.
  2. Book on IRCTC. Register on irctc.co.in. IRCTC's guide says visitors with a valid passport can use its foreign tourist quota, which needs a passport number for each traveller, and that it opens up to 365 days ahead; normal advance booking is 60 days (IRCTC). Availability of that quota has changed over time, so confirm it on the site.
  3. Prefer help in person? The International Tourist Bureau, on the first floor of New Delhi Railway Station, assists foreign visitors with reservations.
  4. Expect dynamic fares. The exact fare is shown on IRCTC when you search and varies by date and class. Our Gatimaan Express guide has recent figures.
  5. Keep your passport and ticket handy. You may be asked for ID when you board.

Be careful about anyone at a station offering tickets or tours. The UK government's travel advice says to avoid people at railway stations offering tickets and tours, and our guide to Taj Mahal scams covers the usual tricks.

From Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal

The ride is short, roughly 15 to 25 minutes by car or auto depending on traffic. Use a prepaid taxi or an app-based cab rather than the first driver who calls out to you, and agree the fare before you start. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, so a 09:50 arrival leaves plenty of time.

If you'd rather not do it yourself

Our Same-Day Taj Mahal Tour by Gatimaan Express handles the logistics. We book your round-trip Executive Class train tickets and both monument tickets, arrange the transfers between your Delhi hotel and Hazrat Nizamuddin, and your private English-speaking guide meets you at Agra Cantt with a private vehicle for the day. That means no ticket queues and no hunting for a taxi at the station. Prices are fixed and shown before you pay.

If you prefer to stay in one vehicle all day, see our Delhi to Agra Same-Day Taj Mahal Tour by Car. You can compare the drive on our page about how long it really takes.
