How Long Does It Really Take to Travel from Delhi to Agra?
By IWIS Global · Published 30 September 2026
By car, the Delhi to Agra drive takes about 3 hours in the early morning and 3½ to 4 hours coming back in the evening. By train, the Gatimaan Express takes 1 hour 40 minutes station to station. The honest answer depends less on the road or the rail line than on everything around it: where in Delhi you start, what time you leave, and how you get from the station to the Taj Mahal.
Here's what each option really takes, door to door.
At a glance
| How you travel | Station or road time | What to add | Realistic door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, leaving early morning | About 3 hours | Nothing, if you're picked up at your hotel | About 3 hours |
| Car, returning in the evening | About 3½–4 hours | Delhi's evening traffic | 3½–4 hours |
| Gatimaan Express (12050) | 1 hour 40 minutes (08:10–09:50) | Getting to Hazrat Nizamuddin station, then a transfer in Agra | Around 3 hours |
| Shatabdi Express (12002) | 1 hour 50 minutes (06:00–07:50) | Getting to New Delhi station before 6 AM, then a transfer in Agra | Around 3 hours |
By car: about 3 hours there, 3½ to 4 back
The road trip is roughly 230 km, most of it on the Yamuna Expressway, a 165 km six-lane road from Greater Noida to Agra with a 100 km/h speed limit for cars. The expressway itself is the easy part. The time goes on getting out of Delhi to reach it, and on getting through Agra at the other end.
That's why the time of day matters more than the distance. On our own tours, a 5:30 AM pickup reaches Agra around 8:30 AM, and a 7:00 AM pickup gets there around 10:00 AM: about 3 hours either way. Coming back, leaving Agra at 4:00 PM puts you at your Delhi hotel around 7:30 PM, because you meet Delhi's evening traffic on the way in. Plan on 3½ to 4 hours for the return.
Where you start in Delhi changes the numbers too. Hotels in south and east Delhi, or in Noida, are closer to the expressway than hotels in the west or near the airport.
By train: 1 hour 40 minutes, but not door to door
The Gatimaan Express is India's first semi-high-speed train. Train 12050 leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at 09:50, according to its timetable. It runs six days a week and not on Fridays. The earlier Shatabdi Express, train 12002, leaves New Delhi at 06:00 and reaches Agra Cantt at 07:50, every day.
Two things catch people out:
- It leaves from Hazrat Nizamuddin, not New Delhi station. They're different stations, and mixing them up is a common way to miss the train.
- The train time isn't the trip time. Add the ride to the station in Delhi, arriving early enough to board, and the transfer from Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal. Together that usually brings a train trip close to the 3 hours a car takes, with an earlier start.
The train still wins on one thing: you're not sitting in traffic, and the ride is smooth enough to rest on.
Which is faster for a day trip?
For most visitors doing the Taj Mahal in a day, the two are close door to door, so the better choice depends on your day. The train is the calmer ride and suits travellers who don't like long road journeys. The car is more flexible: it picks you up at your hotel, waits while you visit, and can leave when you're ready rather than when a train does.
Either way, build in enough time at the Taj Mahal itself. A same-day trip usually runs 12 to 14 hours from pickup to drop-off.
One rule that overrides everything
The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and the Gatimaan Express doesn't run on Fridays either. Whatever you choose, check your date before you plan the journey.
