The Gatimaan Express is the fastest train between Delhi and Agra: train 12050 leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at 09:50, a journey of 1 hour 40 minutes. The return, train 12049, leaves Agra Cantt at 17:35 and reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin at 19:30. That makes it a workable same-day Taj Mahal trip. This guide covers the full timetable, the days it runs, the two classes, fares and how to book. (You may also see it spelled "Gatiman"; it is the same train.)

Rather not book it yourself? Our Taj Mahal day tour by Gatimaan Express includes round-trip Executive Class train tickets, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort entry, a private guide and a private vehicle in Agra. See the tour and prices →

The distance from Delhi to Agra Cantt is about 188 km. Times come from public timetable listings (ixigo.com and confirmtkt.com) checked on 3 October 2026. Some tour operators list the return as 17:50, so check the current timetable on IRCTC before you book, because Indian Railways revises timetables.

Which station in Delhi?

Gatimaan leaves from Hazrat Nizamuddin, not New Delhi railway station. This is the most common mix-up for first-time visitors, and the two stations are in different parts of Delhi. In Agra the train stops at Agra Cantt, which is the station you want for the Taj Mahal.

Which days does it run?

The Gatimaan Express runs every day except Friday. That fits a Taj Mahal day trip, because the monument is closed on Fridays too (tajmahal.gov.in). It also means you can't use this train for a Friday visit to Agra Fort.

Classes and seats

The train has two classes, both air-conditioned seated coaches with no sleeper berths:

Catering is reported to be included in the ticket price, so a tea or meal service comes to your seat. Seats are reserved, and the coach and seat number are on your ticket.

Fares

Fares change with the date, the class and how early you book, because Indian Railways uses dynamic pricing on this train. Recent public listings quote roughly 860 to 1,105 rupees for AC Chair Car and 1,695 to 2,260 rupees for Executive Class, with higher Tatkal (last-minute) fares (RailMitra). The exact Delhi to Agra fare for your date is shown on IRCTC when you search, so treat these numbers as a guide.

How to book

  1. Choose your date and check it is not a Friday.
  2. Register on irctc.co.in. Visitors with a valid passport can use IRCTC's foreign tourist quota, which asks for a passport number for each traveller. IRCTC's guide says it opens up to 365 days ahead, while normal advance booking opens 60 days ahead (IRCTC). Availability of that quota has changed over time, so confirm it on the site.
  3. Search Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt and pick train 12050 for the outward journey and 12049 for the return.
  4. Prefer help in person? The International Tourist Bureau on the first floor of New Delhi Railway Station assists foreign visitors with reservations.

Be wary of anyone at a station offering tickets or tours. Our guide to Taj Mahal scams covers the usual tricks.

Is the Gatimaan Express the right train for a day trip?

For most visitors, yes. You reach Agra by 09:50 and are back in Delhi by 19:30, with no early-morning highway drive. The Bhopal Shatabdi arrives earlier, but its only return from Agra leaves at 21:25. The Taj Express is slower. Our step-by-step guide to the train from Delhi to Agra compares all three.

Let us arrange it

Our Same-Day Taj Mahal Tour by Gatimaan Express books your round-trip Executive Class tickets and both monument tickets for you. We arrange the transfers between your Delhi hotel and Hazrat Nizamuddin, and a private English-speaking guide meets you at Agra Cantt with a private vehicle for the day. Prices are fixed and shown before you pay.
