The Taj Mahal is the white marble mausoleum Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, on the south bank of the Yamuna River in Agra. It’s the main reason most travelers visit Agra, and the monument most same-day Delhi trips are built around.

Ticket price

Foreign tourists pay ₹1,100 for complex entry, plus a separate ₹200 ticket to enter the main mausoleum chamber — ₹1,300 total. Indian nationals pay ₹50 + ₹200; SAARC/BIMSTEC nationals pay ₹540 + ₹200. Children under 15 enter free on both tickets, all nationalities. For the full cost breakdown, see our Taj Mahal ticket price guide.

Hours and Friday closures

The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset — the exact clock time shifts with the season. It is closed every Friday. Ticket counters run from 1 hour before sunrise to 45 minutes before sunset.

What’s included with your ticket

The foreign-tourist ticket bundles in shoe covers, a half-litre bottle of water, a tourist guide map of Agra, and battery bus and golf cart services — and ASI’s Dos and Don’ts page says SAARC and BIMSTEC tickets include the same. Shoe racks just below the main mausoleum are free for every visitor.

Rules worth knowing before you go

Tripods, drones, food, tobacco, and several other items are banned — see our complete prohibited-items list. Photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum chamber itself.

Getting there

Most international visitors see the Taj Mahal as part of a same-day trip from Delhi, roughly 230 km via the Yamuna Expressway. IWIS Global runs private tours from Delhi that visit the Taj Mahal, by car or on the Gatimaan Express train, each with an English-speaking guide; they’re listed below.
