Best Month to Visit the Taj Mahal

By IWIS Global · Published 21 September 2026 · Updated 27 September 2026

November through February has the most comfortable daytime temperatures (roughly 22–29°C highs), but also the worst air quality of the year, with morning fog common enough to sometimes delay sunrise visibility. March is a middle ground: warmer, but clearer. There’s a real trade-off here, not a single “best” answer. It depends whether you’re optimizing for comfort or for a clear view.

Month-by-month temperature

Averages below are 1991–2020 climate normals from the India Meteorological Department, via Wikipedia’s Climate of Agra data table.

MonthAvg. highAvg. low
January22.2°C7.4°C
February26.2°C10.4°C
March32.1°C14.2°C
April38.4°C20.0°C
May41.9°C24.4°C
June41.1°C25.5°C
July36.0°C24.7°C
August33.1°C23.9°C
September34.2°C23.5°C
October34.7°C18.7°C
November29.2°C13.2°C
December23.7°C8.1°C

April through June regularly hits 40°C+ — outdoor walking on the marble platform in that heat is genuinely hard going, especially midday.

The air quality trade-off winter doesn’t advertise

This is the part most “best time to visit” pages skip. Agra’s air quality gets measurably worse starting around October and stays elevated through winter — the same months that are most comfortable temperature-wise. One dataset (IQAir, PM2.5, 2019) recorded January as the year’s worst month at 113.6 µg/m³, against an annual average of 57.2 µg/m³ — both far above the WHO’s annual guideline of 5 µg/m³. This figure is from 2019 and may not reflect current air quality.

Morning fog is also concentrated November through January and can reduce visibility at sunrise specifically — the exact number of foggy mornings per month isn’t published anywhere we could verify.

Sunrise timing by season

Sunrise time matters directly for planning a sunrise tour’s pickup time. Sunrise in Agra in 2026 (India Standard Time), from timeanddate.com:

Month1st15th
January7:07 AM7:08 AM
February7:03 AM6:54 AM
March6:42 AM6:27 AM
April6:08 AM5:54 AM
May5:39 AM5:29 AM
June5:23 AM5:23 AM
July5:26 AM5:33 AM
August5:41 AM5:49 AM
September5:57 AM6:03 AM
October6:10 AM6:17 AM
November6:27 AM6:37 AM
December6:50 AM6:59 AM

So a winter sunrise visit starts nearly two hours later than a summer one. The Taj Mahal itself opens 30 minutes before sunrise.

So, when should you actually go?
