Taj Mahal Sunrise Tour from Delhi: Worth the Early Start?
By IWIS Global · Published 3 October 2026 · Updated 6 October 2026
A Taj Mahal sunrise tour from Delhi is worth it if you want the quietest hour at the monument and don't mind starting in the middle of the night. It is not worth it if you struggle to sleep in a car, or if you're visiting in December or January and a fog-free view matters more to you than the hour. Sunrise gets you a quieter Taj, not a guaranteed clearer one.
What "sunrise" means at the Taj Mahal
The official Taj Mahal website lists visiting hours as 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes before sunset, and says the monument is closed on Fridays (tajmahal.gov.in). So the first visitors walk in while the sun is still below the horizon. The same site describes the marble as pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden by moonlight, which is the reason people pay for the early start.
When you leave Delhi
Agra is about 230 km from Delhi, and the drive takes roughly three to four hours (how long it really takes). Work back from the gate opening time:
| 2026 date | Sunrise in Agra | Gates open (30 min earlier) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | 7:07 AM | 6:37 AM |
| 1 March | 6:42 AM | 6:12 AM |
| 1 October | 6:10 AM | 5:40 AM |
| 15 June | 5:23 AM | 4:53 AM |
Sunrise times are from timeanddate.com; the full year is in our best-time guide. By our arithmetic, that puts a Delhi departure somewhere between about 1 AM in midsummer and about 3:30 AM in midwinter. Other operators advertise a 2:30 AM pickup for sunrise. On our Taj Mahal Sunrise Tour, your exact pickup time is set from the season and your travel date, not a fixed clock time.
What the early start gets you
- Fewer people. In our experience the grounds are far quieter in the first hour than by 10 or 11 AM.
- Softer light for photos. Low sun is kinder to white marble than midday glare. Tripods are not allowed without ASI permission and drones are banned, so plan to shoot handheld (tripod rules).
- The rest of the day. After the main visit you can add Agra Fort or Itimad-ud-Daulah (the "Baby Taj") as an extra rather than driving straight back.
The catch: winter fog
Dense fog sometimes hides the Taj on December and January mornings. The Times of India reported that thousands of visitors on 15 December 2025 were disappointed when fog covered the monument (Times of India, 16 December 2025). Nobody publishes a reliable count of foggy mornings, so treat a winter sunrise as a gamble. Same-day booking on our site stays open until 9 PM IST the night before, so you can check the forecast first.
Sunrise or a later start?
| Sunrise tour | Later start | |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi pickup | Small hours of the night | About 5:30 to 7 AM |
| Crowds | Quieter at the gates | Busier by mid-morning |
| Light | Soft and low | Brighter, harder shadows |
| Winter fog | Can hide the view | More time to thin, no guarantee |
| Best for | Photographers, early risers, crowd-averse visitors | Families, light sleepers, winter visitors |

Before you go
- Tickets. A foreign visitor pays 1,100 rupees for the complex plus an optional 200 for the main mausoleum, and online tickets are 50 rupees cheaper per foreign ticket (see the ticket price guide). On our sunrise tour, monument tickets are not included by default: add them at checkout or buy them yourself at the gate.
- Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed, so a sunrise tour can't run that day.
- Layers. January lows average about 7°C in Agra, so dress warmly for the early hours.
- What to carry. Check the list of things not to bring before you pack.
